Commission awarded by Wiener Netze: EQOS Energie expands 110-kV substation in Kaiserebersdorf

9. November 2020
  • A foundation for a stable power grid now and in the future and integration of Petersen Coils at the Kaiserebersdorf substation.

In the future, Vienna and the surrounding areas will benefit from ongoing investments in the power grid of Wiener Netze and its continuous optimisation: EQOS Energie was awarded the commission for the comprehensive expansion and reinforcement of a 110-kV system at the Kaiserebersdorf substation in Vienna by Wiener Netze GmbH, Austria’s largest combined network operator. The nearly EUR 1 million project is the first that EQOS Energie will execute for Wiener Netze in the high-voltage range. As contractor in this project, EQOS Energie will be responsible for all planning and fitting activities leading up to the commissioning of the Kaiserebersdorf substation. This comprehensive modernisation project began at the start of October and is planned to be completed in March 2022.

“We are happy to work for Wiener Netze again. With the comprehensive expansion and integration work, we will adjust the network capacity of the Kaiserebersdorf substation to today’s increased demands in metropolitan areas. This will make the energy supply in the Vienna area even more stable in the future and ready for the further integration of renewable energies,” said Otto Reinberger, head of Substations/ High Voltage Austria in the Energy Technology business unit at EQOS Energie.

Technical concept and experience: Retrofitting of 110-kV Petersen Coils

“In order to have this commission awarded, we presented a detailed technical development concept as part of a multi-level bidding procedure that can be implemented rapidly and cost-effectively and includes the required primary and secondary technical work. This concept as well as our many years of experience in constructing substations were key for us landing this commission,” Reinberger added. Expansion in the form of two 110-kV Petersen Coils also played a key role in the concept. EQOS Energie will not only add a new 110-kV arc suppression coil system for three transformers to the existing high-voltage switchgear but also integrate two 110-kV Petersen Coils into the existing substation or energy supply network of Wiener Netze. “This further optimises the 110-kV network, and if there is a ground fault disruption, the error can be compensated and the line can continue to operate,” Reinberger said.

A modernised substation in two construction phases

EQOS Energie will expand the Kaiserebersdorf substation in two construction phases. The first phase of construction will be completed as early as mid-2021 and the second will be reaching completion by the end of 2021. For the time being, Otto Reinberger and his team of experts will implement the planning and fitting for the construction and steelwork. Then all subsequent steps will follow – from device assembly and wiring to inspection, commissioning and handover of the expanded substation in the spring of 2022.
