Pilot project for EQOS Kommunikation: 5G coverage at the Brandenburg Gate thanks to new City Mast

The Brandenburg Gate is not only the landmark of the German capital but also a popular hot spot for tourists and events. Whether it’s a New Year’s Eve party, fan zones, demonstrations or just sightseeing: On some occasions, thousands of people gather beneath it. The volume of data transmissions that occur on site every day is correspondingly high, both during major events and in everyday life. Until now, this was only possible to a limited extent and in 4G quality only. However, with the new city masts by EQOS Kommunikation, this will soon be a thing of the past: On behalf of Deutsche Telekom, EQOS Kommunikation is acting as general contractor for the infrastructure and antenna technology and has built a new site that both increases local capacity and ensures seamless 5G coverage on the western forecourt of the Brandenburg Gate, a square called “Platz des 18. März”.

Extensive planning results in better network quality

“We are very proud to have been entrusted by Deutsche Telekom with the task of improving network quality at such an important location,” said Jens Lenk, Managing Director in charge of communications technology at EQOS. However, the special location of the new sites also presents a number of challenges: It was not just the historic preservation and environmental protection requirements of the location that played an immense role but also issues such as logistics far away from public events and closures at such a hotspot. “The first site inspections for the project, which is now being implemented, began at the end of 2023. This shows the effort involved in this project. But thanks in particular to the outstanding collaboration between Deutsche Telekom and the local institutions, all problems were resolved,” Lenk said happily. Thanks to intensive preparation, the EQOS Kommunikation team was able to successfully install the first mast at Großer Tiergarten in accordance with the specific requirements for construction and land use.

Perfect integration into the cityscape with the City Mast

Masts have to meet special requirements, especially in large cities: They should not disrupt the cityscape, blend in well visually, and function as small cells to quickly handle the data traffic. EQOS Kommunikation has now found the ideal solution: “We based our design on a lamppost,” said René Ihl, Managing Director of EQOS Kommunikation. “The mast looks delicate and is designed with internal cable routing so that it is hardly noticeable despite its ten-metre height. If required, a street light can actually be attached.” The mast, which has already been installed, has also been colour-matched to its surroundings so it blends discreetly into the background when you glance at the Großer Tiergarten park areas.
