Construction progress on Ultranet: EQOS Energie renders existing transmission lines fit for the future

  • Overhead line construction for the Ultranet direct current connection: Contract from Amprion worth more than EUR 14 million
  • Replacement of cables and chains over a distance of just under eleven kilometres on the 380-kV grid between Weißenthurm and Koblenz
  • EQOS Energie has already completed seven out of 12 line sections

On behalf of transmission network operator Amprion, EQOS Energie is replacing the conductors on the extra-high-voltage line between the Weißenthurm and Koblenz substations. Seven months after the construction work started, the company has already completed seven out of 12 line sections. On five additional line sections, work has been completed on one side of the route in each case while work continues on the remaining sections. The work is part of the Ultranet direct current connection, one of the key grid expansion projects for the energy transformation in Germany.

The Germany South/West profit center within EQOS Energie’s Overhead Line Construction business unit is responsible for replacing the cables and chains over a distance of about 11 kilometres in the 380-kV grid as well as renewing the fibre optics cable. Around 40 skilled workers are on site to carry out the project worth more than EUR 14 million.

“Replacing the conductors requires a high degree of coordination and technical precision,” Peter Hochberger, Head of the Germany South/West profit center at EQOS Energie, explained. “In built-up areas, we switch from conventional cable installation to the roller line method. This requires customised planning for each route section, which we adapt precisely to the local conditions.”

Grid expansion as the foundation for the energy transformation

Ultranet utilises existing infrastructure, thereby increasing transmission capacity without the need for constructing new routes. “High-performance power grids form the foundation for a secure energy supply and therefore the success of the energy transformation,” Thomas Reichel, Managing Director and Head of the Overhead Line Construction business unit at EQOS Energie, explained. “By modernising existing power lines, we are creating the prerequisites for a sustainable supply of electricity. EQOS Energie brings to this project many years of experience and proven expertise in managing complex grid infrastructure projects.”
