Energy transformation: EQOS Energie builds high-performance cross-border power line

9. oktober 2024
  • Construction for major TenneT contract to build a 380-kV extra-high-voltage line has started
  • Closing the gap between Bavaria and Austria is a milestone for the energy transformation
  • Up to 80 EQOS Energie specialists deployed for the project between Adlkofen and Matzenhof

EQOS Energie continues to drive the success of the energy transformation and climate neutrality – currently with the largest contract to date for the Overhead Line Construction business unit: EQOS Energie’s Austria/Germany South-East profit center is building a 380-kV extra-high-voltage overhead line with a length of around 18 kilometres between Adlkofen and Matzenhof in Bavaria for TenneT, one of the largest transmission network operators in Europe. This is the second of a total of three sections of the cross-border project to construct an extra-high-voltage line from Altheim in Bavaria to St. Peter in Austria. The construction work, which is expected to take about two years, started recently.

“The realisation of this line is another milestone in closing the gap of a high-performance power grid between Germany and Austria. The merger will make it possible to store green electricity from wind turbines in northern Germany in Austrian pumped-storage power plants in the interim and to feed it back into the grid in a controlled manner as needed,” said Thomas Reichel, who is responsible for overhead line construction at EQOS Energie.

Gerald Adelsgruber, head of the EQOS Energie profit center in charge: “Our team – at peak times, 80 specialists will be working on the construction site – will not only build the new line but also dismantle the old existing line. We are very familiar with the local conditions, since we were already entrusted with the construction of the 380-/110-kV line on the St. Peter-Simbach am Inn route. To ensure security of supply at all times, a total of five provisional measures must also be implemented. The fact that not all provisional measures can be operated simultaneously significantly increases the complexity of the workflow.

Doing things right – from the start

In addition to the particular strength in engineering, the comprehensive EQOS service was also crucial for the acceptance of EQOS Energie’s bid in the multi-stage public tendering process. Close interaction between engineering, construction and assembly ensures that problems and corresponding solution approaches can be presented to the customer in detail and clearly at an early stage of the project. The Technical Support department of EQOS Energie, which was established not too long ago, is responsible for coordination and support. Currently, the team provides important input for the purchasing department in cooperation with the engineering department: For effective use, the material for the temporary lines must be precisely specified prior to procurement. EQOS Energie’s aspiration of always keeping the project in view in its entirety and never overlooking any detail has proven to be a convincing factor for success, especially for projects of this magnitude and complexity.
