Jonas has been working as a project manager in Energy Technology at EQOS since September 2021. He oversees complex projects from the planning phase until commissioning. For him, one thing is clear: Success in his profession comes from clear communication, careful preparation, and strong teamwork. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jonas, how would you explain your job to someone who has not had much to do with energy technology before?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Basically, I oversee projects from start to finish \u2013 from the planning phase through construction to commissioning. In this role, I serve as the point of contact for clients, colleagues, and all other stakeholders when it comes to technical questions, project execution, or even business matters such as billing and change orders. My responsibilities include, among other things, scheduling and budgeting, procurement of materials and services, coordinating with suppliers and service providers, and conducting regular site inspections. There, I assess the current status, discuss progress with the construction management team, and check whether any adjustments are necessary. Ultimately, it also involves the joint approval process with the clients. That is what makes my job so diverse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Which aspects of your work do you particularly enjoy?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I find the planning and implementation of technical details particularly exciting. In energy technology, we are usually provided with a basic concept and then develop it further. When changes arise, I have to assess their technical, scheduling, and economic impact. It is precisely this mix of technical expertise, organisation, and responsibility that I really enjoy. I also enjoy collaborating with my colleagues. A construction project only works really well when everyone is on the same page, works in a structured manner, and pulls together as a team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Looking back on your time at EQOS so far, what has been a particular success for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n For me, the greatest success comes from direct interaction with others. One example is a summer party we organised within the team. We went go-karting. All my colleagues joined in, and it was simply a great shared experience. Moments like these really stick with you, because they strengthen the team. In your opinion, what are the key factors for successfully completing a project?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n In my view, communication with everyone involved is one of the most important aspects. This includes clients as well as my own colleagues, the construction management team, and the people at the construction site. If coordination works well, that is already a major step in the right direction. Now, shifting our focus from the project to project management: What qualities should a project manager possess to ensure everything runs smoothly?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n For me, a positive attitude and a high degree of adaptability are very important. During everyday work, there are always changes: small adjustments and delays but also major disruptions, such as a construction halt. I have to be able to handle these without losing sight of the big picture or my composure. Was there ever a moment when you thought: \u201cThis is exactly why I do this job\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Such moments happen time and again, especially when a schedule I have planned out in detail beforehand actually works out in the end. With more complex tasks, I have to proceed carefully: Who will do what and when? What materials are needed? What machines and which employees need to be on site? When all these things comes together, I know why I am doing this job. <\/p>\n\n\n\n “When a plan turns into an actual structure, it is a very special feeling.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n It is also especially rewarding when I see a large structure take shape step by step from the planning phase. When ultimately many colleagues are working together on the construction site and creating something together, that is when I know why I did all that groundwork. <\/p>\n\n\n\n How do you keep track of things in stressful situations?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I think you learn to set priorities over time. You cannot always do everything at once or with the same level of detail. So I have to weigh my options: What is really important right now? Where will it have the greatest impact? And where can I consciously decide to put something off until later? My positive outlook helps me in this respect. Stressful situations are part of the job, but I have to remain capable of taking action and make pragmatic decisions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n What advice would you give to young colleagues who want to become project managers?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I would definitely advise them to enter this industry. Energy technology has a bright future. There is a high project volume and a strong desire for expansion on the part of grid operators. That offers very good prospects. What future events are you particularly looking forward to at EQOS?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Every year, I look forward to our training week in January. That is when many of our colleagues come together and I get to see how the team keeps growing. In my day-to-day work at EQOS, I particularly appreciated that I was able to take on my own challenging projects very soon after being hired and that my onboarding with the company went smoothly and without any adjustment difficulties. I came from the same industry. This allowed me to quickly make contributions at EQOS and to assume responsibilities right away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another important factor is a solid cost estimate. It is, in a sense, the foundation on which a project rests. If that foundation is not right, things will get difficult later on, even if you put a lot of effort into the execution.
Team spirit, effective procurement, and a workflow that is well thought out also play a major role. I have to consider which tasks should be handled internally, where external support makes sense, and how to best allocate personnel, materials, and equipment. It is precisely this smart organisation of processes that makes a big difference in the end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then there is communication. Together with the clients, I have to keep an eye on the goals while also coordinating effectively with my own team. Thoroughness is just as important: I would rather invest the time properly once and check things carefully than have mistakes arise later that could end up being costly.
And then there is something else that is harder to pin down: a certain gut feeling. Many challenges show signs early on. With experience, you recognise such signals better and can take corrective action in a timely manner before a problem escalates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
Day-to-day work is exciting and diverse, because it offers a balanced mix of office work and on-site activities. Furthermore, a project manager can really make a difference. The success of a construction project strongly depends on how well someone organises, communicates, and makes decisions. Working closely with the construction management team and the fitters, the project manager has a significant influence on the project\u2019s success and can play a key role in shaping its orientation and implementation. That is exactly what makes the job so appealing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The team get-togethers are also important to me, e.g., events or visits to our colleagues in Dresden. In the end, it is often precisely these personal encounters that make our everyday work special. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
